Then he gets real serious and tells the kid that there are
some things about our school you don’t notice at first. He
starts talking about certain teachers (I won’t name their
5 names like NG did!) who always have their pet students.
I could see that he was angry about that. He’s like they’re
either so blind that they don’t realize it when someone is
sucking up to them, or they know it and are happy about
it. He got even angrier when he talked about teachers who

10 give you the same grade all year long. They don’t change
your grade no matter how much you do for their class.
You can write excellent papers, he says, do extra work,
take part like crazy in class discussions – it all makes no
difference. Your grade won’t change. By that time, NG
15 was almost shouting. The new guy just stood there with
his mouth open. I felt sorry for him.
Shocked!

‘Darby? I didn’t say those things. It’s the guy who sent
me those messages. He wrote that! It’s all a lie!’
20 ‘I believe you, but shit man, you’re in trouble.’
‘I know. What can I do?’
‘Well, for a starter, you can post a disclaimer.’
‘What’s that?’
‘A statement saying that the blog about you bad-
25 mouthing the teachers is false.’
‘Right. But how do I say it?’
‘I would just tell it straight. You know, the whole
story about how someone is out to get you. And include an
example – one of the messages that you got.’
